Tools of Financial Analysis — Comparative & Common Size
Comparative and common-size statements are the two lenses every analyst uses to read a company's financial health — one shows what changed in rupees and percentages, the other strips away size so you can compare any two companies on equal terms.
Your board exam routinely asks you to prepare and interpret these two statements, and for anyone heading into CA, B.Com, or business, they are the first thing a banker or investor looks at before lending money or buying shares.

Actually…
Percentage change only measures an item's own growth rate, not its weight in the whole. Sundry expenses doubling from ₹500 to ₹1,000 is a 100% rise, but if total expenses are ₹5,00,000 it moved from 0.1% to 0.2% — barely a ripple. Always check the common-size percentage alongside the percentage change.

Why Raw Numbers Lie
A single year's profit figure tells you almost nothing on its own. ₹50 lakh profit sounds great — but was it ₹80 lakh last year? And is the company twice the size of its rival? You need context. Comparative and common-size statements create that context by converting raw numbers into patterns you can actually compare.
Sharma Traders made ₹4 lakh profit in 2024. Is that good? Only when you see it was ₹2.5 lakh in 2023 does the picture become clear — profit grew 60%. That single piece of context changes everything.
Comparative Statements: Side-by-Side Comparison
A comparative statement puts two or more years in one table so you can see what changed. For each line item you calculate two things: the absolute change (the rupee difference) and the percentage change (that difference divided by the base year, multiplied by 100). This shows you not just what changed, but how big the change really was.
Riya's Stationery had net sales of ₹8,00,000 in 2023 and ₹10,00,000 in 2024. Absolute change: +₹2,00,000. Percentage change: +25%. Now do the same for every line — cost of goods, gross profit, net profit — and you instantly see where the business grew and where costs crept up.
Common-Size Income Statement: Every Rupee as a Percentage
A common-size income statement converts every item into a percentage of net sales. Net sales become 100%. Cost of goods sold, gross profit, operating expenses, and net profit are all shown as their share of that ₹100. Now any two companies — big or small — can be compared fairly, because you are comparing proportions, not rupee amounts.
Riya's Stationery (net sales ₹5 lakh) has a net profit margin of 10%. Classic Books Pvt. Ltd. (net sales ₹50 lakh) has a net profit margin of 14%. You cannot compare ₹50,000 with ₹7,00,000 directly. But 10% vs 14% tells you Classic Books keeps more of every sales rupee as profit — a clear, fair comparison.
Common-Size Balance Sheet: How is the Business Funded?
For a balance sheet, the common base is total assets (set at 100%). Every asset, every liability, and every equity item is expressed as a percentage of total assets. This tells you how a company is built — how much of its assets come from owners' money versus borrowed money, and how its assets are split between long-term and short-term items.
Sunrise Bakery has total assets of ₹10 lakh. Fixed assets are ₹6 lakh (60%), current assets are ₹4 lakh (40%). Long-term debt is ₹3 lakh (30%), and owners' capital is ₹5 lakh (50%). Now compare any other bakery the same way — their size does not matter, you are comparing proportions.
Trend Analysis: Spotting Patterns Over Years
Trend analysis extends comparative analysis across three, five, or more years. You pick the earliest year as the base year (set at 100) and express every later year as an index against that base. A steadily rising index shows consistent growth. A sudden dip in an otherwise rising trend is a warning signal worth investigating.
Tandoori Express tracked net sales over five years. The index read: 100, 112, 130, 148, 172. Sales are not just growing — they are accelerating. If Year 5 had dipped to 155 instead, the bank manager reviewing the loan application would immediately ask what went wrong that year.
Three Traps That Fool Even Good Students
First: a huge percentage change does not mean the item is important — always check its common-size percentage too. Second: a common-size balance sheet shows how a company is funded, NOT how profitable it is — profit comes from the income statement. Third: rising current assets does not always mean more cash — if trade receivables (money customers owe) are piling up, the company actually has less cash to pay its own bills.
Sundry expenses doubled from ₹500 to ₹1,000 — a dramatic 100% rise. But total expenses are ₹5,00,000, so this item moved from just 0.1% to 0.2% of the total. That is barely a ripple in the business. A student who only looked at the percentage change would panic for no reason.

The full picture
Every business produces financial statements — a balance sheet, a profit and loss account, a cash flow statement. But a single year's figures tell you very little on their own. Is ₹50 lakh in profit good or bad? It depends on last year's profit, on the company's size, and on how rivals are doing. Comparative and common-size statements are the tools that answer those questions. They transform raw numbers into patterns you can actually read.
A comparative statement places two or more years side by side in one table. For each line item, you calculate two things: the absolute change (the difference in rupees) and the percentage change (that difference divided by the base year figure, multiplied by 100). Suppose Sharma Traders had net sales of ₹8,00,000 in 2023 and ₹10,00,000 in 2024. The absolute change is +₹2,00,000 and the percentage change is +25%. Doing this for every line — cost of goods sold, gross profit, operating expenses, net profit — reveals exactly where growth or shrinkage is happening, and which changes are proportionally large versus small.
A common-size statement converts every figure into a percentage of one common base. For an income statement, the base is net sales (every item is expressed as a percentage of net sales). For a balance sheet, the base is total assets (both the asset side and the liabilities side). Why? Because once everything is in percentages, you can compare any two companies fairly — even if one has ₹100 crore in total assets and the other has ₹10,000 crore. A kirana store and a supermarket chain can now be placed side by side to compare how much of every sales rupee goes to the cost of goods sold, how much to rent and salaries, and how much is left as profit.
Let us build a simple example to make this concrete. Imagine Riya's Stationery, with net sales of ₹5,00,000. Cost of goods sold is ₹3,00,000 (60% of sales), gross profit is ₹2,00,000 (40%), and net profit after all expenses is ₹50,000 (10%). Now look at Classic Books Pvt. Ltd., with net sales of ₹50,00,000, cost of goods sold of ₹28,00,000 (56%), gross profit of ₹22,00,000 (44%), and net profit of ₹7,00,000 (14%). The absolute rupee figures are incomparable — Classic Books earns 14 times more. But in common-size form, you can immediately see that Classic Books is more efficient: it keeps more of every sales rupee as gross profit (44% vs 40%) and earns a higher net profit margin (14% vs 10%).
Trend analysis takes comparative analysis one step further. Instead of comparing just two years, you track a key figure — net sales, operating profit margin, debt-to-equity ratio — over three, five, or even ten years. You set the earliest year as the base (100%) and express every subsequent year as an index against that base. If net sales index reads 100, 112, 130, 155, 172 over five years, the trend is clear: steady, accelerating growth. If in Year 4 the index dips to 148 from 155, that break in the pattern is a signal worth investigating. One year of movement is noise; three or more years reveal structure.
These tools have clear limits you must understand for your exam and beyond. First, comparative analysis is only useful if the accounting policies (for depreciation, inventory valuation, etc.) stay the same across the years being compared. If a company switches from straight-line depreciation to written-down value, the numbers become incomparable. Second, common-size statements eliminate size differences but they cannot tell you whether the percentages themselves are good or bad — you need an industry benchmark for that. Third, trend analysis assumes conditions are broadly similar across the years; comparing a pre-COVID year to a COVID year needs careful interpretation. Always read the notes to accounts alongside these statements.
An Indian example
Imagine you are comparing two neighbourhood restaurants — Spice Garden and Tandoori Express — both applying for a ₹10 lakh bank loan. Spice Garden reported net sales of ₹40 lakh and a net profit of ₹4 lakh last year. Tandoori Express reported net sales of ₹15 lakh and a net profit of ₹2.25 lakh. The bank manager cannot simply compare ₹4 lakh with ₹2.25 lakh — one restaurant is nearly three times larger. Using a common-size income statement, she calculates net profit as a percentage of net sales: Spice Garden earns 10%, while Tandoori Express earns 15%. Suddenly the picture flips — Tandoori Express is the more profitable business per rupee of sales, even though its absolute profit is lower. The manager then uses a comparative statement to look at Tandoori Express's last three years: net profit margins of 12%, 13%, and 15%, an improving trend. She approves the loan. Common misconceptions to watch for

- A rise in current assets always means the company's cash position improved — but current assets include trade receivables and inventory, not just cash. If current assets rose because customers are delaying payments (trade receivables piling up), the company has more money owed to it but less actual cash in hand, which can worsen its ability to pay its own bills on time. Always look at the composition of the change, not just the total.
