Ramesh owns a small tea stall in Kochi and handles everything himself. But when he opens 20 branches across Kerala, he can no longer be present at each one. He writes down rules — keep stocks topped up, greet every customer, give a receipt for every order — so his branch managers all behave the same way without waiting for his call.

Fayol's Top Principles — Order and Authority

Henri Fayol, a French mining company CEO, gave us 14 principles. The most important ones are about order and authority. Division of Work means everyone specialises — a person who does one task repeatedly gets faster and better at it. Authority and Responsibility means the power to give orders must always come with the accountability for results — you cannot have one without the other.

Real-life example

At a CA firm in Chennai, one team handles only GST filings, another handles only audits, and a third handles only income tax returns. Because each team does just one type of work, they finish tasks faster and make fewer mistakes — that is Division of Work in action.

One Boss, One Goal — Unity of Command and Direction

Unity of Command says every employee should receive orders from only one boss. If two bosses give different instructions, the worker gets confused and both bosses can blame each other when something goes wrong. Unity of Direction goes one level higher — all teams working towards the same goal should follow one single plan and one single leader.

Real-life example

At a garment factory in Tirupur, a stitching worker used to get instructions from both the production manager and the quality manager — sometimes contradicting each other. The factory fixed this by giving workers one direct supervisor only. Disputes dropped, and output became predictable.

The Human Side — Equity, Initiative, Esprit de Corps

Fayol knew that people are not machines. Equity means treating all employees fairly and kindly — favouritism kills morale. Initiative means letting employees come up with their own ideas rather than just following orders; it keeps them engaged. Esprit de Corps (French for team spirit) means building a sense of unity so everyone feels they are part of something bigger than their own job.

Real-life example

Infosys holds annual innovation contests where even junior engineers can pitch product ideas to senior leaders. Winning ideas get funding. This builds both Initiative and Esprit de Corps — employees feel heard and proud to work there, which lowers staff turnover.

Taylor's Big Idea — The One Best Way

Frederick Taylor worked in steel factories in America and noticed workers were slowing down deliberately because nobody had ever measured the right speed. His solution was Scientific Management — use observation, timing, and experiments to find the single most efficient way to do any task, then train every worker in that method. He called this 'the one best way.'

Real-life example

Priya runs a saree weaving unit in Surat. A consultant studies the weavers and finds they walk 90 minutes a day to a central thread rack. Moving individual thread trays to each workstation cuts that walk to zero. Average output jumps from 1.8 sarees to 2.6 sarees per weaver per day — a 44% gain from one simple change.

Differential Piece-Rate and Functional Foremanship

Taylor introduced two practical tools. Differential piece-rate wages reward efficient workers with a higher pay per unit once they cross a target — slower workers earn less per piece, faster workers earn more. This makes it worth everyone's effort to improve. Functional Foremanship means replacing one all-purpose supervisor with several specialist supervisors, each responsible for just one area like speed, quality, or repairs.

Real-life example

At Priya's weaving unit, weavers who produce up to 2 sarees a day earn ₹120 per saree. Those who produce more than 2 in a day earn ₹160 per saree. The best weavers take home ₹500 extra per week. Nobody needs Priya to beg them to work harder — the pay structure does it automatically.

Fayol + Taylor — Two Lenses, One Company

Fayol looked from the top down — he asked how to organise a whole enterprise. Taylor looked from the factory floor up — he asked how to perfect one task. Neither is complete alone. Together they give you an organisation that is both well-structured and highly efficient.

Real-life example

At Maruti Suzuki's plant in Manesar, Taylor's time-and-motion studies eliminate wasted seconds at every assembly station. At the same time, Fayol's Unity of Command makes sure each line worker has exactly one supervisor, and team huddles build Esprit de Corps. The result is one of the highest-output car factories in Asia.

The full picture

Why does a company need 'management principles' at all? Imagine you own a kirana shop in Thiruvananthapuram with 5 employees. You know what to do. Now imagine you're running a factory with 5,000 workers across three states. You cannot personally supervise every decision. You need a system — a set of principles that guides managers even when you're not in the room. That problem is exactly what Henri Fayol and Frederick Winslow Taylor tackled in the early 1900s, and their answers still shape every Indian company today.

Henri Fayol was a French engineer who rose to run a large mining company. He noticed that management failures — confusion about authority, workers getting orders from two bosses, employees feeling treated unfairly — cost more than technical failures. From his experience he distilled 14 principles. Think of them as guidelines, not laws: each one is flexible and applied differently depending on the organisation's size and culture. The most important ones for your exam are: Division of Work (specialism raises output — your CA firm separates audit from tax from GST filings for this reason); Authority and Responsibility (the power to give orders must come with the accountability for results); Unity of Command (every worker takes orders from one boss only — two bosses create confusion and excuses); Unity of Direction (all activities aimed at the same goal follow one plan, one leader); and Scalar Chain (a clear, unbroken line of authority from the MD at the top down to the newest apprentice at the bottom). Equity, Stability of Tenure, Initiative, and Esprit de Corps round out the human side: treat people fairly, give them job security, encourage their ideas, and build team spirit.

Frederick Winslow Taylor worked in American steel factories and was frustrated by what he called 'soldiering' — workers deliberately slowing down to protect their jobs. His insight was blunt: if nobody has measured the right way to do a task, how does anyone know a worker is slow? He proposed Scientific Management — using observation, measurement, and experiment to find 'the one best way' to perform any job. The steps are: first, study the task with time and motion studies (break it into small motions, time each one, eliminate the unnecessary ones); second, select workers scientifically for that job and train them in the best method; third, separate planning from doing — managers plan and design the method, workers execute it; fourth, reward workers who meet or exceed the standard with differential piece-rate wages (higher pay per unit above the target). Taylor also introduced functional foremanship — instead of one all-purpose supervisor, assign eight specialist supervisors, each in charge of one function like speed, repair, or quality.

How are Fayol and Taylor different? Fayol looked at management from the top down — he was a CEO asking 'How do I organise this whole enterprise?' Taylor looked at management from the factory floor up — he was an engineer asking 'How do I optimise this one task?' Fayol's principles apply to any organised activity: a hospital, an NGO, a startup, even a school. Taylor's techniques apply best where work is repetitive and measurable — assembly lines, delivery logistics, call centres. Neither is complete alone. Fayol without Taylor gives you a well-organised company full of inefficient processes. Taylor without Fayol gives you a hyper-optimised factory where workers feel like machines and morale collapses.

Modern Indian companies blend both. A Maruti Suzuki plant uses Taylor's time-and-motion studies to eliminate wasted seconds in each assembly operation, while Fayol's Unity of Command ensures every line worker knows exactly who their supervisor is, and Esprit de Corps is built through team huddles and safety celebrations.
