These two tools appear directly in your Plus Two board exam — both as 4-mark and 6-mark problems — and form the foundation of financial analysis that every CA, MBA, and business owner uses every single day to decide where to invest or lend money.

Percentage changes depend on the base. A 50% rise in cash from ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh is only a ₹1 lakh absolute change. A 5% rise in inventory from ₹80 lakh to ₹84 lakh is a ₹4 lakh change. Always check both the percentage and the rupee amount before drawing conclusions.

Raw numbers can fool you
A business reporting ₹10 crore profit sounds great — until you learn it earned ₹200 crore in sales, meaning it kept only 5 paise from every rupee. Numbers without context are misleading. You need a way to compare them fairly, either across years or against other companies.
Rajan runs Lakshmi Tools & Hardware in Thrissur. His sales jumped from ₹18 lakh to ₹22 lakh in 2024 — he celebrated. But his CA showed him that his profit had actually fallen from ₹3.60 lakh to ₹3.30 lakh. More sales, less profit. The raw sales number had fooled him completely.
Comparative statements: side-by-side years
A comparative statement puts the same financial item from two different years next to each other in one table. You then calculate two things: the absolute change (the ₹ difference) and the percentage change (difference divided by the base-year value, times 100). This instantly shows which items grew faster than others.
Priya Textiles had Net Sales of ₹75 lakh in 2023 and ₹80 lakh in 2024 — an absolute rise of ₹5 lakh (6.67%). But their Cost of Goods Sold rose from ₹50 lakh to ₹56 lakh — an absolute rise of ₹6 lakh (12%). Sales grew 6.67%, costs grew 12%. The comparative statement catches this instantly; looking at just one year would completely hide it.
Two kinds of change: ₹ and %
Every comparative statement shows both kinds of change. The absolute change is simply the rupee difference between two years. The percentage change tells you how big that change was relative to where you started. You need both — a 50% rise sounds alarming, but if the base was just ₹2 lakh, the actual ₹ increase is only ₹1 lakh and may not matter much.
If cash rises 50% from ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh, the absolute change is just ₹1 lakh. But if inventory rises only 5% from ₹80 lakh to ₹84 lakh, the absolute change is ₹4 lakh — four times bigger in rupees. A manager must check both columns before deciding what to worry about.
Common-size statements: everything as a percentage
A common-size statement converts every line item to a percentage of one chosen base number. For a Profit and Loss Account, the base is Net Sales = 100%. For a Balance Sheet, the base is Total Assets = 100%. This removes the effect of size completely, so you can compare companies — or the same company across years — on a level playing field.
Anoop Cashew Exports in Kollam has total assets of ₹500 crore. Siya Spices in Kozhikode has total assets of just ₹8 crore. You cannot compare their ₹ numbers directly. But if Anoop holds 18% of assets in inventory and Siya holds 45%, you can immediately say: Siya is tying up far more capital in unsold stock — a warning sign of slow sales or poor cash management.
Trends matter more than one year
One bad year can be a fluke — maybe steel prices spiked, or there was a flood. But if profit margin falls three years in a row, that is a real problem. Banks always look at at least three years of comparative data before approving a big loan. A single dip is a speed bump; three straight dips is a structural decline.
A factory's net profit margin over three years: 18% → 15% → 12%. Each drop alone looks manageable. But together they tell a bank manager: this business is losing ground every year. When the factory applies for a ₹50 crore working capital loan, the bank either says no or adds strict repayment conditions. One year of data would have missed this completely.
What common-size statements cannot tell you
Common-size statements show proportions, not absolute rupees. Two companies can both show a 20% profit margin — but one earns ₹200 crore and the other earns only ₹2 crore. For a bank deciding whether to give a ₹100 crore loan, the absolute rupee profit is what matters. Always read percentage insights alongside the actual rupee figures.
A small shop in Thrissur and a large supermarket chain both show a 20% profit margin in their common-size P&L. The shop earns ₹4 lakh in profit; the supermarket earns ₹4 crore. A supplier offering 90-day credit of ₹50 lakh would happily give it to the supermarket but might hesitate with the shop. Percentages tell you the shape; rupees tell you the scale.

Raw financial numbers can be misleading on their own. A profit of ₹10 crore sounds impressive until you learn that sales were ₹200 crore — meaning the company kept only 5 paise from every rupee it earned. Or a company proudly reports ₹20 crore in cash, but owes ₹150 crore in debts. Tools of financial analysis exist to give numbers their proper context. The two main tools in your Plus Two syllabus are comparative statements and common-size statements. Together they help investors, creditors, managers, and even students like you read between the lines of any set of accounts.
A comparative statement puts the same financial item side-by-side for two or more accounting periods. Imagine you are looking at Priya Textiles' Profit and Loss Account for 2023 and 2024 together. Net Sales went from ₹75 lakh to ₹80 lakh — an absolute increase of ₹5 lakh, and a relative (percentage) increase of 6.67%. Cost of Goods Sold went from ₹50 lakh to ₹56 lakh — an absolute increase of ₹6 lakh, which is 12%. Even though sales rose, costs rose faster. The comparative statement catches this immediately; looking at either year alone would hide it. You calculate two columns: absolute change (₹ difference) and percentage change ((difference ÷ base year value) × 100).
A common-size statement converts every line item into a percentage of a chosen base figure. For a Profit and Loss Account (also called Statement of Profit and Loss), the base is always Net Sales = 100%. If Net Sales are ₹80 lakh and COGS is ₹56 lakh, then COGS is 70% of sales. For a Balance Sheet, the base is Total Assets = 100% (on the assets side) and Total Capital + Liabilities = 100% (on the liabilities side, which will also equal the same absolute number). Every item — inventory, receivables, equity capital, bank loans — becomes a percentage of that total. This makes two companies of completely different sizes directly comparable.
Why is this size-cancelling ability so valuable? Consider two Kerala businesses: Anoop Cashew Exports in Kollam with ₹500 crore total assets, and Siya Spices in Kozhikode with ₹8 crore total assets. You cannot compare their ₹ figures directly. But if both show inventory at 30% of total assets, you can immediately say they carry similar levels of stock relative to their size. If Siya Spices holds 45% of assets in inventory while Anoop Cashew holds only 18%, Siya is tying up far more capital in stock — a sign of slower sales or poor working capital management. Common-size analysis makes this comparison possible in seconds.
Comparative analysis is most powerful when you look at trends over three to five years. A single dip in profit margin could be a blip — maybe raw material prices spiked briefly, or the company invested in a new factory that temporarily raised costs. But if profit margin falls for three straight years — from 18% to 16% to 14% — that is a structural decline. Something is genuinely wrong: rising competition, outdated technology, or weak pricing power. Banks lending working capital loans routinely run this analysis before approving a ₹50 crore facility. If they see three years of margin compression, they either decline or demand stricter repayment conditions.
One important caution: common-size statements reveal proportions but hide absolute rupees. Two companies can both show a 20% profit margin, yet one earns ₹200 crore in absolute profit and the other earns only ₹2 crore. For a lender deciding whether to give a ₹100 crore term loan, the absolute rupee profit matters enormously — the first company can repay easily, the second cannot. Always read common-size insights alongside the actual rupee figures. These tools are powerful detectives: they raise the right questions ('Why did inventory jump from 18% to 26% of assets?'), but you must look at the full accounts and management notes to find the answers.
An Indian example
Rajan runs a small hardware store in Thrissur called Lakshmi Tools & Hardware. In 2023, his net sales were ₹18 lakh and he earned a net profit of ₹3.60 lakh — exactly 20% of sales. In 2024, sales grew to ₹22 lakh, which made Rajan happy. But when his CA, Meena, prepared a comparative and common-size P&L, she showed him something worrying: his COGS had risen from 55% of sales to 62% of sales, because steel and aluminium prices had jumped. Operating expenses eased from 25% to 23% — a small improvement. But the combined effect was that net profit had actually fallen to ₹3.30 lakh, now just 15% of sales, even though absolute sales were up ₹4 lakh. Rajan had been celebrating a revenue increase that was actually hiding a profit decline. Meena also showed him a common-size balance sheet: inventory had grown from 22% of total assets to 31%, meaning unsold stock was piling up. Rajan immediately called his supplier to renegotiate prices and ran a discount sale to clear the slow-moving stock. Without the comparative and common-size analysis, he would never have spotted the problem in time.
Common misconceptions to watch for
- A bigger percentage change always signals a bigger problem. Not true — percentage changes depend on the base. If cash rose 50% from ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh, the absolute change is just ₹1 lakh. If inventory rose only 5% from ₹80 lakh to ₹84 lakh, the absolute change is ₹4 lakh. Always check both the percentage AND the rupee amount before drawing conclusions.
- Common-size statements tell you whether a company can pay its debts. They do not — they only show proportions. A company with a healthy-looking 22% profit margin in common-size could still be unable to pay its bills if that margin represents only ₹5 lakh in absolute profit but it owes ₹1 crore in loan repayments this month. Liquidity and solvency require looking at absolute rupee figures, not just percentages.
- Comparing two consecutive years is enough to identify a trend. One year's change can be a one-off event — a flood, a GST rate revision, or a one-time big order. A real trend only emerges over at least three years. If profit margin falls from 18% to 15%, that could be bad luck; if it falls 18% → 15% → 12%, that is a clear warning sign that demands attention.
