Why your exchange house gives you less

The rate on this page is a reference (mid-market) rate — the midpoint that central banks and markets publish. When you send money home through an exchange house, a bank or an app, you get a slightly lower rate plus, sometimes, a fixed fee. That gap is how they earn. So use this page to compare: if an exchange quotes ₹2 less per dinar than the reference rate, on 500 KWD you lose about ₹1,000. Check two or three providers on the same day, and always compare the total rupees that will land in the account, after fees.

Why the dirham and riyal hardly move against the dollar

Most Gulf currencies are pegged to the US dollar: the UAE dirham at 3.6725 per dollar, the Saudi riyal at 3.75, the Qatari riyal at 3.64, the Omani rial at 0.3845 and the Bahraini dinar at 0.376. So when the dirham-to-rupee rate changes, it is really the rupee moving against the dollar. The Kuwaiti dinar is different: it is linked to an undisclosed basket of currencies, which is why it moves a little on its own — and why it is the highest-valued currency unit in the world.

Sending money to India: a quick checklist

  • NRE account: money sent from abroad, fully repatriable, and the interest is tax-free in India.
  • NRO account: for income earned in India (rent, pension); the interest is taxable and TDS is deducted.
  • Keep the remittance receipts — they show the money came from abroad if anyone ever asks.
  • Salary earned abroad by a non-resident is generally not taxed in India. See our income tax calculator for income that is.
  • Need the branch code for the account you are sending to? Use the IFSC code finder.

A worked example

Say you earn 450 KWD a month and the reference rate is ₹305 per dinar. Your salary is worth 450 × 305 = ₹1,37,250. If your exchange house quotes ₹303, you receive ₹1,36,350 — ₹900 less, before any fee. Over a year, a ₹2 gap on a monthly remittance of 450 KWD adds up to ₹10,800.

For commerce students

Exchange rates, pegs and remittances are part of Class 12 Macroeconomics, in the open-economy chapter on the balance of payments and the foreign exchange rate. Remittances from Gulf workers are a big part of Kerala’s economy and of India’s current account — a good real-world example for your answers.

Rates are reference rates for information only, updated once each working day — not an offer to buy or sell currency. The rate you get from a bank or exchange house will differ. This is an estimate, not financial advice.
