What an IFSC code is

The Indian Financial System Code is an 11-character code the Reserve Bank of India gives every bank branch that takes part in online transfers. You need it to send money by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS to an account at that branch. It is printed on your cheque book and passbook.

  • First 4 letters — the bank (SBIN is State Bank of India, FDRL is Federal Bank, KSBK is Kerala Bank).
  • 5th character — always the digit zero, kept for future use.
  • Last 6 characters — the branch.

So in SBIN0000001, SBIN is the bank, 0 is the reserved digit and 000001 is the branch (Kolkata Main). People often type the letter O instead of the zero — the checker above will tell you.

IFSC vs MICR

The MICR code is a 9-digit number printed in magnetic ink at the bottom of a cheque. It is used to clear cheques, not for online transfers. The first three digits are the city (matching its PIN code), the next three the bank and the last three the branch.

NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI — which one?

  • NEFT: any amount, settled in half-hourly batches, 24×7.
  • RTGS: for ₹2 lakh and above, settled one by one in real time.
  • IMPS: instant, any time, usually up to ₹5 lakh.
  • UPI: instant, using a UPI ID or phone number — no IFSC needed.

The “Works with” line on each branch shows which of these the branch supports.

Co-operative banks with another bank’s code

Many district and urban co-operative banks don’t have their own IFSC series. Instead they use a code from a sponsor bank — for example, codes like FDRL0… for co-operative banks linked through Federal Bank, or HDFC0C… through HDFC Bank. The finder shows the co-operative bank’s own name for such codes.

How accurate is this list?

The list is the open IFSC dataset published by Razorpay (release of 1 September 2026), which is compiled from the RBI’s own lists and NPCI. Before using it, we checked it against the RBI’s current per-bank lists for 14 banks — SBI, Federal Bank, South Indian Bank, Canara Bank, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Union Bank, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Indian Overseas Bank, CSB Bank, ESAF and Kerala Bank. Of RBI’s 1,10,118 codes for those banks, 99.6% are in our list, with matching branch and state; the few missing ones are branches opened after the release. If a code isn’t found, always confirm with the RBI’s official list or your bank.
