What an index mark is

Kerala’s universities fill degree seats through a centralised allotment (CAP). You are ranked by an index mark: your Plus Two marks, plus extra weight for the subjects that matter for that course, plus bonus marks, minus a deduction if you took more than one attempt. Each university has its own formula — that’s why the same student gets four different numbers.

B.Com formula at each university (2026-27)

  • University of Kerala: Plus Two total + your Accountancy marks again + 15% of your Business Studies marks.
  • University of Calicut: Plus Two total + 25 marks for each commerce paper (Accountancy, Business Studies and similar), up to 50.
  • MG University: only your Part III optional subjects (out of 800) + 50 marks for each subject of the commerce combination (including Economics, Maths and Computer Applications), up to 150.
  • Kannur University: Plus Two total + 25 marks for each commerce subject (Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Computer Application and others), up to 75.

Students from Science or Humanities can also apply for B.Com with at least 45% overall; they simply get little or no subject weightage. For BBA, Kerala, Calicut and Kannur use the Plus Two total, and MG uses the Part III total (MG splits BBA seats 50:50 between Arts/Commerce and Science).

Bonus marks and deductions

  • NCC, NSS, Student Police Cadet or Scouts & Guides at Plus Two level: +15 (only one counts).
  • Child or widow of a jawan or ex-serviceman: +15.
  • Extra NCC certificate marks: Calicut +3/5/10 for A/B/C; MG +5 for ‘B’; Kannur +5/10 for B/C.
  • Calicut only: +10 for an A grade or first place at the State HSE Arts Festival.
  • Kannur also adds 10 for a college in your home district (government/aided) or home taluk (unaided) — not included above, as it depends on the college.
  • Each extra attempt at Plus Two: Kerala −10; Calicut and Kannur −10 up to −25; MG −5 up to −20. Improvement exams don’t count as an attempt.

CBSE students

The universities convert CBSE and other-board marks to the Kerala scale of 200 per subject (1200 in all) before applying the same formula. Convert each subject as (your mark ÷ maximum) × 200 and enter those figures above. Check your university’s prospectus for the exact rule.
