How HSCAP works out your WGPA
Plus One seats in Kerala’s government and aided higher secondary schools are filled through the single-window system (HSCAP). Applicants are ranked by WGPA. The 2026 prospectus (clause 16) gives the formula:
- WGPA = AVP + BVP
- AVP = (total grade points of all 10 subjects + grade points of the weighted subjects) ÷ (10 + number of weighted subjects)
- BVP = (bonus points − minus points) ÷ 10
Grade points are A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C+ = 5, C = 4 and D+ = 3. You need at least D+ in every SSLC subject to apply.
Weighted subjects for each stream
The subjects that matter most for a stream are counted twice (clause 18). For every Commerce combination (codes 36–39: Business Studies and Accountancy with Economics and Maths, Statistics, Political Science or Computer Applications), the weighted SSLC subjects are Social Science and Mathematics. So if you want Commerce, your Social Science and Maths grades carry extra weight.
- Science with Biology (01–03, 09): Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics
- Science without Biology (04–08): Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
- Most Humanities combinations: Social Science
- Humanities with Statistics (30–32): Social Science, Mathematics
- Humanities with Communicative English (33–35, 44): Social Science, English
The official example
The prospectus works one out for Science combination 01: total grade points 83, weighted-subject grade points 33, 10 subjects and 4 weighted, bonus 5. That gives (83 + 33) ÷ (10 + 4) + 5 ÷ 10 = 8.7857. The calculator starts with exactly those grades — pick “Science with Biology” to see it match.
Bonus points
- Passed SSLC under the Kerala State board: +3
- Same school: +2 · same grama panchayat / municipality / corporation: +2 · same taluk: +1
- NCC (75% attendance), Scouts & Guides (Rashtrapati or Rajya Puraskar) or Student Police Cadet: +2; Little Kites with A grade: +1 — only one of these counts, and not if you got grace marks
- Child of a jawan killed in action: +5; child of a jawan or ex-serviceman: +3
- The total is capped at 10. Each extra attempt at SSLC is a minus point.
There are no bonus points for sports or arts. Sports achievers apply through the separate sports quota instead.
When two students have the same WGPA
Ties are broken in order: students without grace marks first, then the higher grade points in the weighted subjects, then English, then the first language, then the order of your options, then locality, then co-curricular achievements, and finally age (older first).
CBSE and other boards
If you studied CBSE or ICSE, HSCAP converts your marks to grades inside its own system; the prospectus does not publish that conversion table, so this calculator is for Kerala SSLC grades. You also do not get the +3 Kerala SSLC bonus. CBSE students who took Mathematics-Basic cannot choose a Science combination with Maths.
