Economics
Statistics for Economics & Indian Economic Development — quantitative tools and the story of the Indian economy.
CBSE Class 11 Economics
Class 11 Economics under CBSE has two parts. ‘Statistics for Economics’ runs from the meaning of statistics, through collecting, organising and presenting data, to measures of central tendency and dispersion, correlation and index numbers; its topics include primary and secondary data, sampling and census, bar diagrams, histograms and ogives, Karl Pearson’s coefficient, Spearman’s rank method, and CPI, WPI and IIP. ‘Indian Economic Development’ starts with the economy on the eve of independence and the years 1950–1990, then covers liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, poverty, human capital, rural development, employment, infrastructure, the environment, and a comparison of India, Pakistan and China.
The 18 chapters are grouped into 2 units, 8 on statistics and 10 on the Indian economy. Every chapter combines a myth-check, 6 or 7 concept cards with real-life examples, a written explanation, a worked example and 5 practice questions that mix multiple-choice options with answers to be typed in. The same questions form the quiz, where an optional ‘How sure are you?’ rating can be set before answering, and a running score is kept. A ‘Stuck?’ panel offers three graded hints for each of several common misconceptions.
For the statistics chapters, a useful order is to work the textbook’s own problems on paper first and then compare the method with the worked example here, one step at a time. The chapters on Indian economic development can be read after the matching NCERT chapter, with the notes and cards used to check what has been retained. Where the class follows a different sequence from the chapter list on this page, the teacher’s sequence takes priority.
